Known internally as the TS020, the new Toyota racer was more commonly referred to as the GT-One. The car was built around a carbon-fibre monocoque with an aluminium honeycomb core, which used the engine as a stressed member. While the chassis was designed by TMG, it was actually manufactured by specialists Dallara in Italy. In the 1999 LeMans 24h the Toyota GT-One #3 was on its way to catch the leading BMW V12 LMR #15, but then the Toyota #3 was forced far off the racing line by a lapped BMW V12 LMR. The resulting puncture on the Toyota #3 meant victory for BMW #15 and only 2nd place for Toyota.
